FROM THE COMMANDER

Dear Comrades,

This is your June Newsletter. Please be advised that our 102nd State Convention will be taking place June 15-19 at the Centennial Hotel 303 W North River Dr. Spokane WA 99201. The uniform is VFW casual.  You can find the timeline of events in the following link http://vfwwa.org/di/vfw/v2/default.asp?pid=116566.

This past month we had our Installation of Officers.  Congratulations to the remaining and newly installed!

Most importantly the Post and Auxiliary had the opportunity to honor those who have paid the ultimate price this last month. Memorial day is a sacred day to all war veterans, a day to remember the importance of honoring Americans killed in war.  I am proud to report that both members of the Post and Auxiliary took part in the collective consciousness of remembrance on this day by attending gravesites, wearing Buddy Poppies, attending commemorating ceremonies, and marching in parades.  In doing so we continue to preserve our nation's war dead memory, service and sacrifice for future generations. Thank you all.

Respectfully,

Andrea Pace, Commander VFW Post 969

FROM THE AUXILIARY PRESIDENT

Dear Members,

The Post and Auxiliary had great representation this past Memorial Day at the Tahoma National Cemetery, at the Fir Lane Memorial Ceremony, at Mountain View Funeral Home, and at various locations for the Buddy Poppy Drive.  I want to give a warm thanks to all who participated in this very significant act of remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our great country.

Sincerely,

Eloise Sharp, President Auxiliary

CHAPLAINS CORNER

Welcome June,

New month, new chapter, new page and new wishes.  May the month give you courage, strength, confidence, patience, self-love and inner peace.  May every day in June fill your days with Hope, love, sunshine and energy.  Let there be joy, fun and laughter.

Amen,

Dolores Lopez, Chaplain Auxiliary Post 969

VA Adds Presumptive Service Connection for Southwest Asia Theater Operations

Recently, the VA updated its regulations through an Interim Final Rule that was published in the Federal Register on April 26, 2022, adding nine rare respiratory cancers to the list of presumed service-connected disabilities due to military environmental exposures to fine particulate matter. With a presumptive service connection, the VA presumes that certain disabilities are by their military service.

In this presumptive case, any Veteran who served any amount of time in the Southwest Asia theater of operations beginning Aug. 2, 1990, to the present, or Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Syria or Djibouti beginning Sept. 19, 2001, to the present and has or had one of the listed cancers below at any time during or after separation from military service may be eligible for disability compensation benefits.

·        Squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx.

·        Squamous cell carcinoma of the trachea.

·        Adenocarcinoma of the trachea.

·        Salivary gland-type tumors of the trachea.

·        Adenosquamous carcinoma of the lung.

·        Large cell carcinoma of the lung.

·        Salivary gland-type tumors of the lung.

·        Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the lung.

·        Typical and atypical carcinoid of the lung.

Whether you have previously been denied or have never applied for disability benefits for one of these conditions or are a survivor of a Veteran who passed away from one of these conditions, you should contact me so we can discuss your unique situation and get you rated for your service-connected disabilities.

If you have questions or need help submitting your VA claim, contact Mel West at 253-376-8216 or vso@vfw969.org.
